Blog 3 – Building ideas

Going back over some of the older modules, I remembered my ideas from Improvising and Devising.  Creating my own performance, based on a situation comedy idea,  I want to produce something that is topical that people can relate to.  A life sketch, something that covered an event in everyday life.  I am basing my ideas around comedy sit-coms, where they have a solo section similar to the end sketch on “Open All Hours” where Ronnie Barker summed up the days events.

An excellent sketch as an example of solo performance, although it was created for television, it could also be a live performance.   Staged in a way that everything is close by,  as it was created for television the camera angles and positions had to be taken into account.  Special effects of the suggestion box burning and the back board helped the scripted lines.

Fontaine – Why am I Straight – Whoopi Goldberg

I enjoy comedy performances so I was drawn to watch this one; ‘Why Am I Straight’, she captivated the audience from the outset, rising up through the floor onto a blacked out stage, the worst singing of a rearrangement of the American National Anthem!

Profound language from the start and continued throughout, necessary to the script but not something I particularly enjoy doing on a stage.   I assumed she was referring to her sexuality with the ‘Why Am I Straight’ but it was a reference to her coming off drugs and seeing the world in black and white.

Goldberg routine focused around people in the press at the current time, topical material that the audience would relate to.   She kept the audience engaged throughout her performance, the references to sexuality and homosexuality she was careful not to cross boundaries.  This was a strong performance from a seasoned performer, she is a very talented actress and performer.   However, I am not sure I am ready for a stand-up comedy performance.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMA5Iqrnr6Q&t=846s
